People are screaming to get us to buy their product. Companies spend millions of dollars to get our attention. Now that we have the internet, we can tweet and get the whole world’s attention. But how does one go about getting the attention of God?
The wrong way to get God’s attention.
Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.” So they took the bull given them and prepared it.
Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.
At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.” So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention. (1 Kings 18: 25-29 NIV)(Emphasis is mine.)
The prophets of the lifeless god Baal did not get a response from their false idol even though they cut themselves and shouted. You can never get an idols attention; it has no ears.
The right way to get God’s attention.
Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29:12.13 NIV)
Earnestly ask God to speak to you through prayer. God knows if you are sincerely wanting His presence.
The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. (Psalm 145: 18 NIV)
Approach Him in Truth. Jesus is Truth (John 14:6). Jesus made the way for us to go directly to God without having to go through a priest (Matthew 27:51).
“I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me; I was found by those who did not seek me.
To a nation that did not call on my name, I said, ‘Here am I, here am I.’ (Isaiah 65: 1 NIV)
This is the surprising message of scripture. God is continually revealing Himself to people. He is not hiding.
Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” (Genesis 3:8,9 NIV)(Emphasis is mine.)
We are the ones hiding. God is seeking us. He is calling to us. He wants to be known by us.
We love because he first loved us (1 John 4:19 NIV)
He is the one that initiated our relationship. He loved us before we even knew Him (Romans 5:8)
I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ So he got up and went to his father.
“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. (Luke 15:19, 20 NIV)
God is watching for us to come back to Him. As soon as our heart seeks Him, He runs to us with arms out stretched. Read the God Who Runs Rejoicing.
The irony of 1 Kings 18:25-29 is that instead of our shouting and bleeding to get God’s attention like the prophets of Baal. The true God shed is own blood so we could be in a continuous communion with Him. Our God made the sacrifice for us; because we could not do it.The true God shed is own blood so we could be in a continuous communion with Him. Our God made… Click To Tweet
